Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans

Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans is a large blue Hosta.  This variety was one of the first blue Hostas that were known to exist.  It is a very popular plant and is often found in older shade gardens.  Hosta Elegans can handle some sunlight and is slug resistant.  This Hosta is a sport of the species Hosta sieboldiana.

This Hosta plant grows to 28 inches high and forms a clump that is 45 inches wide.  Hosta Elegans can be used as a backdrop to set off other perennials or as a specimen plant.

The leaves of Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans are oval shaped and they measure 10 inches long by 9 inches wide.  The strongly textured leaves of Elegans are very thick which is what gives it that slug resistant that is so handy to have in a Hosta.  This plant has solid blue/grey leaves which are large and attractive.

Hosta elegans has white flowers which bloom in June.  The flowers stalks can be a massive 40 inches tall but often come in at less than that.  This is not a hybrid Hosta and the seed that you get from this plant is viable and can be planted for new plants but the plants will not look like the parent so if you want a clone you will need to use division.

Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans is a fantastic shade plant which is easy to find at most retailers that sell Hosta plants.  If you know someone with an older shade garden you may even be able to get a free division if you show a little interest in their garden.
