Hosta Francee
Two of the most common and popular Hosta Fortunei are Hosta Francee and Patriot. Fortunei was the parent of Francee who was the parent of Patriot so this is a line that has a great reputation for good looking Hosta plants.
Francee has bright green leaves with a narrow white margin. This plant grows to about 2 ft. high and 3 ft. wide. It’s a good sized perennial but not the largest hosta around.
Fortunei Hostas can handle more sun than some of the others, like Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans, so you do not have to put Francee in deep shade, it can handle some sunlight.
Give this plant plenty of water, well-drained soil, and sun or shade and it will grow for a long time. It has light lavender flowers but that is not the reason most people grow it. The flowers are normally considered to be insignificant and it is “understood” that people grow this plant for its showy foliage.
Hosta Francee is a popular and well mannered plant that will do well in almost any garden setting assuming it has enough water. Like most Hosta varieties you need to watch this guy for slug damage give it a helping hand if it gets heaved from the soil in winter. Established plants normally don’t have heaving issues but newly planted ones can need a bit of a shove back down in spring.
Hosta Plants tend to come up later in the spring than most other perennials so give it awhile before you start worrying about it. Most of my perennials have started but my Hostas have not begun to show (I’m zone 5 and it is mid-April).
If you choose to divide this plant do it early in the season as soon as you see it emerging from its winter rest. Hostas are one of the easy to divide plants just cut and replant and water. I’ve never lost one dividing it except when I did something stupid so I don’t blame the plant for that.
