Hosta Fire Opal

One of the more unusual and attractive Hosta plants is Hosta Fire Opal.  This sport of Hosta Gold Standard is popular and can be hard to find so if you do find it grab it before it sells out.

The leaves of Fire Opal are light green to yellow with the thinnest lines white and green along the edges.  I’m not even sure if it has enough nonwhite on it to call it variegated.  The leaves are lightly textured.

This is a fast growing large Hosta plant that likes to be in the shade.  It cannot handle much sunlight at all and should not be grown in anything stronger than dappled sunlight.

Hosta Fire Opal grows to a height of 24 inches and a diameter of 40 inches.  The leaves are 7 inches long by 5 inches wide and are oval.

The pale lavender flowers of this plant bloom from July to August.  This plant has thin leaves and is not resistant to slugs.

Hosta Fire Opal is a great plant that should have a home in any large shade garden.

Other Hosta Varieties

Hosta Honeybells is a green Hosta that can take quite a lot of sun.  This plant has heavily rippled leaves which have slightly lighter green accents.  This fast growing Hosta plant will reach a mature size of 26 inches high by 45 inches wide in a few years.

Hosta Sieboldiana Frances Williams is an older blue Hosta with yellow margins.  Frances Williams is one of the most commonly seen variegated hosta plants in older shade gardens.  This plant needs protection from the sun as it is prone to burning.

Hosta Red October is a red petiole Hosta.  It has solid green leaves with red flower stalks, seed pods, and leaf stems.  There is not a wide variety of choices in the red accented Hosta plants but this is a good one to start out on.  The red accents give this neat mounding plant additional visual interest.

Hosta Sun Power is a yellow leaved plant that loves the sun.  It is ideal for those of us who have very little shade to divide up between the Hosta plants.  The leaves are heavily rippled and slightly twisted which when combined with the bright coloration of the leaves will make this plant really stand out.

Hosta Twilight is a beautiful fast growing medium sized hosta plant that does well in sun or shade.  The dark green leaves have a wide gold margin and occasional gold streaking on the leaves.  The thick leaves of Twilight provide it with slug protection.
