Hosta Aphrodite

Hosta Aphrodite is a plant that is grown for its flowers. For once a Hosta plant has better flowers than it does leaves. This is a Hosta Plantaginea sport.

Normally Hosta plants have rather boring flowers but Aphrodite combines many good flowering qualities that will make up for its rather plain leaves. The flowers are large and double which actually make them stand out in the garden rather than just blending into the background. The 6 inch long white flowers are scented as well. Because of the unique qualities of the flowers Hosta Aphrodite can be hard to find and you may want to order early in order to ensure that the nursery does not run out before they can fill your order.

The leaves of Aphrodite are a medium green and heart-shaped. This plant will form a 15x18 inch mound and it blooms in late summer. Other than the prominent veining the leaves are pretty flat and they do not have much in the way of texture.

You can’t plant this hosta in the sun. This is a shady perennial that needs as much shade as you can give it to avoid leaf burn. Plant this one where you’d plant your other shade loving hosta plants such as Hosta Sieboldiana Frances Williams.

H. Aphrodite is prone to slug and snail attacks, needs to be well watered, and have well drained soil. This is not a plant for a total beginner but if you have a little experience with caring for a slightly fussy hosta plant than you should do fine.

Some Other Hosta Hubs:

Hosta Red October

Hosta Wide Brim

Hosta Gold Standard

Hosta Fortunei

Hosta Francee

I’d probably skip Hosta Aphrodite if I had limited shade there are other fragrant Hosta plants with more to offer but with plenty of shady garden space to fill this one is a definite possibility.
