Hosta Abiqua Elephant Ears has some of the largest leaves of a large sized Hosta. There are some giant Hostas with bigger leaves, but no large sized ones that do. The leaves are 17 inches long and 11 inches wide. The plant itself grows 30 inches high and 45 inches wide.
The leaves of Abiqua Elephant Ears are a solid green/blue but the plant gets its name from the shape (and the size) of the leaves. The leaves have a very slight waving along the edges. This waving in conjunction with the size of the leaves is reminiscent of the ears of an elephant.
The flowers of Abiqua Elephant Ears Hosta are on 40 inch flower stalks. They are tubular and the plant blooms from late July to late August.
Hosta Abiqua Elephant Ears is a sport of Hosta sieboldiana. Hosta sieboldiana is very popular species of Hosta from which many blue Hostas have come.
This is a shade Hosta, and should be protected from as much sunlight as possible. The leaves of Abiqua Elephant Ears are not slug resistant.
This Hosta plant makes a bold statement in any garden. The foliage is clean and bright. Hosta Abiqua Elephant Ears can be grown as a specimen or in a grouping with compatible plants. This is not a popular or well known variety, and the gardener who grows it will get a lot of interested questions and comments.
Good companions for this plant are other shade-loving Abiqua Hostas such as, Hosta Abiqua Blue Shield. Any shade loving perennial which likes regular watering will grow happily along side of this variety. Just make sure that the companions have plenty of space to grow in or Abiqua Elephant Ears can overwhelm and out-compete them.
