Heartburn

Heartburn is a condition which afflicts many people each day.  It is a painful burning sensation which is caused by stomach acid moving up into the esophagus.  The burning can be felt in the chest, neck, or throat.  Frequently occurring heartburn can be a symptom of a more serious disease.  If heartburn is occurring regularly a trip to the doctor for a few tests to find out why you are afflicted with the problem is in order.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), food sensitivity, and pregnancy are all causes of heartburn which can be treated with a prescription, over the counter medications, or the use of home remedies.  Taking medications which neutralize the acid in the stomach is one of the most common methods of treating heartburn.  A common ingredient in home remedies for heartburn is baking soda as it neutralizes the acid.

Lying down can increase the pain and occurrence of heartburn.  When a person is lying down the acid can take its little trip out of the stomach easier.  Using a pillow or other device to hold your head up can help to lessen the occurrence of nighttime heartburn.

Tomatoes and citrus are frequently the cause of heartburn as they are highly acidic foods.  Other foods can cause the problem with different people and determining which food is causing your heartburn will help you to cut those out of your diet and lessen the frequency of heartburn attacks.

Heartburn is a common and painful experience that most people suffer from at one point or another throughout their lives.  For some people it is an occasional and uncomfortable occurrence and for others it is a chronic problem leading to frequent medication and diet changes.  It can be expensive to medicate and can cause esophageal problems if left untreated.

Utilizing the many options available and following the instructions of your physician can alleviate the pain and suffering which it leads to.

Nice work dwippy. I was hoarse a lot and after tests I was told I had acid reflux.(I had no idea.)I am glad we caught it early.Because of acid reflux I have to elevate my head 6" and because of lymphedema in both legs I have to elevate my legs 12 to 14 inches. Think I need a hammock instead of a bed? Ha!
