Empress Wu Hosta

If you are looking for an absolutely huge Hosta you may want to look into Empress Wu Hosta. This plant will get at least 39 inches tall. The main attraction of this plant is its size. It does not have the most attractive foliage and it is not variegated so all I can come up with is that it is a great specimen and conversation piece.

This plant needs to be planted in a shady area and it does not like the sunlight. It is prone to slug damage so make sure to do your best to combat the slug population if you have one.

The leaves are large as well on this plant around 18” across. The leaves are heart-shaped and heavily veined. The leaf color is a medium green. The rather bland tubular flowers are violet.

Other than it being big I really can’t personally see the attraction for this plant but there is a plant for everyone and this one is simply not for me.

If you have a lot of room and want a Hosta plant that is sure to draw attention then Empress Wu Hosta might be just what you need for that dark shady corner… large dark shady corner perhaps I should say.

Give this plant plenty of room, plenty of shade, and plenty of water and you should have a very large perennial plant in no time at all. This is a fast growing plant so you will not have to wait forever for it to get to a good size. Hey check it out I complimented it. I have nothing against the plant and am not suggesting that it’s not a perfectly good plant so don’t get all excited on me.

As this plant loves the shade good companions would be other shade loving Hostas such as Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans as well as non Hosta shade plants Astilbe and Heuchera.

If you are looking for a stand out plant that can hold its place among the giants than Empress Wu Hosta might just be the right plant for you. Give it the care it needs and you will quickly have a conversation piece and probably get to meet all your neighbors.
