There are so many different types of catnip products out there that going through just a few of them could take all day. I’m not planning to do it all day so just a quick rundown on what my cats like and dislike.
My cat that likes to fetch likes the cheap cat toys. Strings, twisty ties, and balls of paper are some of his favorite cat toys. He’s the only cat I’ve ever had that would play fetch so I encourage it even though I don’t always want to play.
My big fat lazy cat likes the smaller fluffy cat toys. Her favorite of all favorite toys is this little foil ball she thinks it is the best catnip toy in the world. It’s not exactly a ball more like a foil pom-pom. She’ll chase it but the fetching thing seems to be beyond her comprehension. The game generally goes something like I throw it and she runs to it and then looks at me and then I go to it and throw it again. I’m pretty well trained for a human.
I know a foil ball doesn’t sound like a catnip product but since it came in a package of catnip I’m assuming it qualifies.
Both of my cats love dried catnip especially. One of them likes to roll in it and the other just eats it. They are not so crazy about the scent of catnip on a toy but both of them like the dried stuff.
I’ve never given them fresh catnip but that’s on my list of things to try with them. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’ll pick a patch of the garden and grow some catnip out there. My neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of stray cats so it shouldn’t be a problem. There are too many loose dogs running around for a cat to feel comfortable outdoors here.
There are catnip sprays available. This product is a liquid catnip that you can spray on toys or whatever that you want to attract the cat too. This is another thing I have not tried yet but am willing if I ever come across any. I could probably find some at the pet store down the street but I haven’t been there in awhile.
Catnip mats are available for those cats that like to dig but owners who don’t like them to dig the furniture. These are similar to scratching posts but are somewhat more coarse and lay on the floor instead of standing upright. Some of these are embedded with the scent of catnip.
Speaking of scratching posts many of these qualify as well. I’m not sure how long the catnip smell hangs around but once they get used to using it they will normally continue the habit even without the scent that attracted them in the first place.
A number of things you can buy for your cat claim to be organic catnip toys. I'm not sure if they'll like it better but it is probably better for your cat.
That’s my general listing of catnip products. I’m sure there are more out there but I don’t feel like hunting them all down right now.
