Best Catnip

Some cats like catnip and some don’t but according to my cats the best catnip is Calamity Premium Catnip.  I’m not sure why they like this particular type but of all that I’ve purchased this brand of catnip is their favorite.

Although both think this catnip is the best only one really likes the toy that comes with it.  This cat toy is a foil ball and my female really loves it.  She will chase it and carry it around the house.  The male could care less however.

There’s no way that it still has the scent of catnip on it because this ball is pretty old at this point.  We ran out of the cat’s favorite catnip awhile back and I picked up a different brand which they don’t seem to care for as much.  I’d tell you the name but I can’t remember what it was.  We put it in the empty container that held the other catnip to make it easier to give it to them.

Even though I’m not exactly sure why they prefer the one brand of catnip over others I’m thinking it has something to do with the texture of the catnip.  My cats seem to like the finer texture catnip that has few twigs and rough bits.

When I buy catnip I usually go for the largest container that a store carries that way it lasts longer but I keep it in a little jar (old package) with a lid to try and keep it fresh.  It seems to work out for my cats so if you happen to pick up catnip that is not is not in a container that will reseal you may want to get one of those at least one time so that you can reuse it.

I’ve had cats that liked catnip and some that didn’t and if you have one that doesn’t respond to the chemicals you might as well give up on it.  You can’t teach a cat to like catnip, they either like it or they don’t.  The best catnip is the catnip your cats like.  Cats are strange critters and what one likes the next one will totally ignore.

There are a lot of catnip toys if you don’t want to give cats the dried herbal version but mine don’t seem interested in the smell of those toys.  They might play with them but it doesn’t seem to matter to them if they are treated with catnip or not.

Another option would be to grow your own catnip.  You’d want to keep it away from the cats unless you don’t mind them tearing up your planting area and scattering potting soil all over the room.  Cats like fresh catnip as well as the dried stuff.

I haven’t grown it yet but I’m planning to eventually.  I tried giving my cats some catmint which is a perennial garden plant but they didn’t like it that much.  They much prefer my iris flowers or my peacelily to catmint.

I’ve bought a lot of cat toys for my cats and the ones that they seem to like the best are the smaller ones that they can carry around easily.

Do a little experimenting and pick up the dried version and a few catnip toys and see which one is the best catnip for your pet.
